Medical Relief Alliance believes that health care is a basic human right. Our vision is therefore to realize a world where children, women and men affected with HIV/AIDS are able to lead a healthy and self sufficient lifestyles. As we participate in developing a world that mirrors our vision, we maintain a simple mission. That is, to improve the health and economic well being of people living in sub Sahara Africa. Accordingly, we are guided by key concepts that define our values, namely; accountability, commitment and integrity. To redress the impact of HIV/AIDS in the communities we work in, Medical Relief Alliance operates three core programs that strengthen the capacity of local institutions to deliver quality healthcare services to affected Kenyans. Our programming also promotes micro enterprising activities and advances HIV/AIDS prevention campaigns that lead to reduced infection rates. To this end, our programs are: Medical Supplies & Equipment Relief Program (MS+ER) Delivers medical supplies and equipment worth hundreds of thousands of dollars to Kenyan clinics and healthcare institutions that serve communities which are heavily impacted HIV/AIDS.
Beginning with Kenya, the core objective of MS+ER is to respond quickly, efficiently and cost effectively to health needs in Sub-Sahara Africa. We work to meet critical health needs of impoverished communities through mobilizing and leveraging resources from governments, communities, hospitals and individuals with the aim of enhancing sustainable and cost-effective approaches to saving lives.
In Kenya, the average government healthcare expenditure person is $67/year with majority of rural dwellers most affected with HIV/AIDS actually only having access to about $10 per person/year! Our motivation for MS+ER is therefore straightforward. The knowledge that simple gestures of concern, altruism, empowerment, volunteerism and to a great extent waste prevention--result to thousands of lives saved.
To date, MS+ER has collected, packed, freighted and delivered medical supplies and equipment worth over $500,000. This translates to tens of thousands of lives being impacted and saved for many years after we deliver the initial medical relief support.
Goat Hope Our microenterprise project that works with rural Kenyan households impacted with HIV/AIDS to fight the effects of malnutrition and poverty often characteristic of communities ravaged by this Disease. Goat Hope focuses on enhancing the health and economic outlook of people affected with HIV/AIDS by gifting them with dairy goats that improves their nutrition through goat milk consumption while supplementing the household income through the sale of surplus milk. Each Goat Hope project usually works with six beneficiary households of people affected with HIV/AIDS, that represents 36 children men and women per community. This project costs $4,000 on average resulting to increased income of over 130% in the first year of the project! Our beneficiaries are often able to rise above the UN defined poverty line before the third year of the project. In three years the average return on the $4,000 investment is usually $72,000 due to reproduction of the goats and the subsequent nutrition and income outcomes that are realized. Our goal is to gift 100 goats annually that benefit over 200 children, women and men throughout rural Kenya including Transmara, Kilgoris, Kisii and Webuye districts.
Community Health Outreach Program Aims to provide education and evidence-based HIV infection prevention services to communities most impacted with HIV/AIDS. Our single most effective strategy has been to align our program goals with Kenya government's. That is, testing all HIV at risk adults by the year 2012. MRA’s voluntary HIV counseling and testing (VCT)campaigns target rural dwellers who are most underserved and have highest risk of mortality when infected due to the conditions of poverty and disease already prevalent in their communities. The challenge has been to sustain our VCT campaigns. Our Community Health Outreach Program achieves its objectives through organizing health fares, mobile clinics including our ambulance program and medical missions. Our Medical Missions programs are designed to augment Kenya’s healthcare expertise with support from US based medical and paramedical professionals. We provide short and long term medical support to Kenyan hospitals which include but not limited to: direct patient treatment and care; medical and paramedic training; community health outreach and administrative support. |
