Run to Benefit Medical Relief Alliance: Project Africa

CareOne has teamed up with the Medical Relief Alliance (MRA) to support a truly great cause during the first annual Dunroven 5K Run/Fun Walk on Sunday, Oct. 21, with all proceeds benefiting MRA: Project Africa. The partnership with the MRA signifies CareOne's commitment to helping people in need.

"We are so proud to be working with the MRA to help support their continued efforts in bringing medical relief to those in need," said Tim Hodges, vice president of operations at CareOne. "We believe in a caring culture of excellence that doesn't stop at senior care."


This past June, the MRA, with a team of volunteers, loaded a 40ft container of medical supplies to be shipped to MRA Kenya. Among the medical supplies were x-ray machines, laboratory and physiotherapy equipment, and 100 hospital beds donated by CareOne. The primary goal of MRA's program is to fill the gap of lacking medical supplies and equipment in many of the hospitals, health care centers and clinics due to poverty and failed economies... One PT develops appreciation for similarities and differences in rehab medicine in Kenya

The next time you are having a bad day, imagine working in a rehab department with no equipment other than a TENS machine, giving manual resistance to patients the entire day because you have no weights to work with, turning away patients because you do not have the proper tools to treat them, and working under these conditions for $150 per month. This is typical of rural rehabilitation centers in Kenya.

CareOne at Dunroven employees Nahashon Nyambasora, RN, Joann Gallardo, OTR, and myself, together with other health care professionals, had the opportunity to visit Kenya on a medical mission through Medical Relief Alliance (MRA) from July 31 to August 10. We observed health care delivery in Kenya, and our discussions with our African colleagues gave us an appreciation for both the similarities and differences in the practice of rehabilitative medicine in Kenya and in the United States...
